Matilda maintained the record of the births and deaths of her children in her Bible. Without the page we would know nothing about children David Jonathan and Mary Ann, except that they died as infants.

"Before the railways came to Elmira, the farmers dressed their hogs at home, then took the carcasses to Jonathon Uttley's in Elmira to sell. He had a light team of horses with which he took the dressed meat to market at Guelph or Toronto." Up the Conestogo by Isaac R. Horst, Page 190.

From the book, Enterprising Elmira,"The natural products of the farms, such as grain, potatoes, turnips, apples, sugar beets, butter, cheese, timber, wood and lumber form a large portion of the outgoing shipments. The Elmira grain markets, established by the late Jonathon Uttley, who died in the fall of 1895, has always enjoyed a popularity that has kept it in the vanguard of the many markets that are open to the farmers of this district".
